In , Dr. James E. The school was chartered as a private institution and funded by Woodrow Wilson along with Northern and Southern philanthropists. It became the National Training School in and was sold and reorganized. The school received state funding in after becoming part of the state system and was renamed Durham State Normal School.
In , the General Assembly converted the institution into the North Carolina College for Negroes, becoming the first state-supported liberal arts college for black students in the U. In the late s and 40s, the school added graduate classes in arts and sciences as well as professional schools in law and library science.
In , General Assembly designated the college as a regional university and changed the name to North Carolina Central University.
